Abu Dhabi unveils first solar-powered community harbour at Al Dhannah
Community-focused design blends tourism, leisure and transport facilities seamlessly
ABU DHABI – Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan has inaugurated Al Dhannah Community Harbour, marking the opening of Abu Dhabi’s first fully integrated solar-powered community port.
The launch follows the completion of a major modernisation and expansion project aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure in the Al Dhafra Region.
During a tour of the site, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed reviewed the harbour’s advanced facilities, designed to support local communities while boosting maritime activity. The project aligns with the broader national vision led by UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to enhance coastal development and sustainability.
Solar-powered community port
Developed through collaboration between Integrated Transport Centre, AD Ports Group, and Abu Dhabi Maritime, the harbour represents a significant addition to the emirate’s maritime network. Officials confirmed the project forms part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity, upgrade infrastructure, and support sustainable development across Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan was briefed on the harbour’s development phases by Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group.
Discussions focused on the project’s components and its role in improving operational efficiency while meeting international maritime standards. The harbour’s development also reflects directives to enhance services in Al Dhafra, with a focus on long-term growth and community wellbeing.
Harbour features
Positioned as a key coastal gateway, Al Dhannah Community Harbour introduces a range of facilities designed for both residents and visitors. A new ferry terminal connects seamlessly with the Dalma Island route, featuring a 425-square-metre passenger building with seating capacity for 78 people. The harbour also includes a public marina with 16 berths and 99 dry-parking spaces, alongside two boat maintenance workshops and a 15-metre-wide slipway.
Supporting land-based access, the site offers 205 car parking spaces and 10 dedicated spaces for recreational vehicles, catering to extended stays and overland travel. The harbour’s layout has been carefully designed to maximise views of the Arabian Gulf and nearby Sir Bani Yas Island, while preserving existing Ghaf trees.

Leisure and hospitality elements further enhance the site’s appeal. A playground, a 260-square-metre restaurant space, and a 325-metre reception pavilion for resort guests contribute to positioning the harbour as a vibrant community hub. The design prioritises inclusivity and shared use, encouraging both everyday visits and tourism activity.
Sustainable edge
Al Dhannah Community Harbour stands out as a flagship sustainability project within Abu Dhabi’s maritime sector. The facility features 168 solar panels installed above parking areas, generating enough energy to meet up to 80 per cent of the harbour’s operational needs. This makes it the public marine facility with the highest solar capacity in the emirate.
Additional environmental measures include shore power connections that allow ferries to switch off their engines while docked, significantly reducing emissions and improving air quality. Ferry operations at the harbour are expected to mitigate up to 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
The site also incorporates 14 electric vehicle charging points, supporting the transition towards cleaner transport for both visitors and staff. These initiatives align with wider sustainability goals and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint while expanding infrastructure.
Dr Abdulla AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, stated that the harbour strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a global maritime hub and supports economic growth through enhanced connectivity. He noted that the addition of modern amenities and improved access to Al Dhafra addresses rising demand for marine mobility and leisure.
Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi highlighted the project as part of AD Ports Group’s broader strategy to develop infrastructure that meets community needs while driving economic activity. He referenced recent upgrades to ferry terminals on Al Aliah and Saadiyat Islands as part of continued expansion efforts across the emirate.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Nasser Mohammed Al Mansouri, Dr Abdulla Hamad Al Ghfeli, Captain Saif Al Mheiri, and Noura Rashid Al Dhaheri, alongside representatives from key government and maritime entities.
